"Hey Diddle Diddle
The Cat and the Fiddle
The Cow jumped over the moon.
The Little Dog laughed
To see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon."
- Children's nursery rhyme
Spoons are utensils for cooking, eating, and serving food that consist of a small bowl and a handle. Its companion the fork is made up of at least two prongs and a handle. Together, forks and spoons are known as flatware.
Researchers have discovered ancient spoons of baked clay, bone, and wood. Bronze spoons have been discovered in ancient Egypt. The earliest forks had only one point but were made two-pronged in ancient Rome. These were used primarily for serving foods. By the 1800s, matched sets of these utensils, along with knives, were common in households and carried by travelers.

Did you know? A modern utensil that places the prongs of the fork within the bowl of the spoon is called a "spork." These are common in fast-food restaurants, reducing the need for separate pieces of flatware.
The fork and spoon are often used as symbols to represent food, hunger, or dining. They are often used in kitchen or restaurant décor. Characters in film or animation may grasp their utensils in their fists and bang them on the table to express great hunger and an impatience to be served.
Sometimes, these utensils are personified as characters, as exemplified by the nursery rhyme quoted above. Another example is the character Forky from Disney's animated film Toy Story 4.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Spoon and Fork
1. Begin by drawing the bowl of the spoon. Draw a long curved line and double it back upon itself.
2. Draw the spoon's handle. From the previous line, extend a long curved line and double it back upon itself. Attach it to the opposite side to completely enclose the spoon.
3. Draw a wide "U" shaped line at the base of the spoon's bowl, where it meets the handle. This contours the bowl and gives it a three-dimensional appearance.
4. Begin to outline the fork. Start with two straight lines to sketch the sides of the tines. Draw convergent curved lines at the bottom of each.
5. From the previous line, extend a long curved line and double it back upon itself to form the fork's handle. Attach it to the opposite side.
6. Decorate the handles of the utensils. Draw a series of connected "U" shaped lines at the extremity of each handle. Use straight lines to draw "X" shapes in the middle of the handles. Notice that each "X" consists of four straight lines that do not touch.
7. Begin detailing the tines of the fork. Draw a short straight line from the side of the fork. Then, extend a deep, narrow "U" shaped line.
8. Draw the second tine. Again, draw a short straight line followed by a deep, narrow "U" shaped line. Then, draw the short straight line at the top of the next tine.
9. Complete the final two tines using a deep, narrow "U" shaped line and a short straight line.
Color your fork and spoon. As "silverware," they are typically silver or gray in color. Plastic cutlery, however, comes in every color imaginable. Some utensils are even made out of wood.
